Overview of the Readings (Proper 17C) for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost 2025

We are using the Track Two readings.

• Old Testament: Sirach 10:12–18
  • Pride starts by turning away from God, leading to downfall, while God lifts the humble.
• Psalm: Psalm 112
  • A hymn that praises the righteous individuals who live with reverence and generosity, leaving a legacy that endures.
• Epistle: Hebrews 13:1–8, 15–16
  • Promotes unwavering love, hospitality, contentment, and praise, all grounded in the constant presence of Christ.
• Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7–14
  • Teach humility and radical hospitality: take the lowest seat and invite the marginalized, trusting in God’s honor and blessing.

Reflection on the readings for Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost 2025

This week’s scriptures challenge us to live boldly against the pull of pride and self-preservation:

• Sirach cautions about the damaging consequences of pride.
• Psalm 112 highlights the stability and honor that result from being generous and humble.
• Hebrews encourages us to reflect Christ’s unchanging character through love, service, and praise.
• Jesus redefines hospitality through the Gospel: true honor comes from serving those who cannot return the favor.
